FEMALE ANCHOR: And . . . meet the stars behind one of the season's biggest new hits. We'll take you inside Family Law.
{COMMERCIAL BREAK}
MALE ANCHOR: It is one of the most popular new shows of the TV season -- Entertainment Editor, David Sheehan, here now to show us, well, actually a behind the scenes look at Family Law This oughta be good.
SHEEHAN: A show with real dimension for a change, huh? That's what I think. (next to Sheehan is a picture of Dixie Carter and Christopher McDonald as Randi and Rex, respectively) And if you happened to watch tonight's episode of Family Law, you'll know that Academy Award nominee Kathleen Quinlan is, of course, the star of the show, but what makes Family Law really click, I think, is the ensemble cast of actors playing the lawyers who are part of a very unusual law firm.
Clip of FL's opening theme. NOTE: There are various background clips and sound from the show which aired during this segment, but they're omitted from this transcript. A link to the full video clip of this segment is available at the top of this transcript and in the Video section of "The Cabaret."
The following is in Sheehan's voiceover and interviews pre-taped with the cast on the set of Family Law.
SHEEHAN: Kathleen Quinlan stars as a long-time family lawyer. She and her husband used to run a law firm together, then he decided the marriage was over. The husband took the clients and even the furniture, leaving Kathleen Quinlan's character in single mom status trying to keep it all together.
KATHLEEN QUINLAN: To try to be the best that she is, um, as a lawyer, you know, what she actually believes that to be, and to still remain a mother to her children.
SHEEHAN: The only partner left was Danni Lipton, played by Julie Warner.
JULIE WARNER: These are four very, um, protected, strong individuals who, um, I think we do kind of come together. There is a lot of comraderie --
SHEEHAN: The comraderie comes in the form of the supporting cast, like Dixie Carter from Designing Women. Dixie plays an attorney who spent time behind bars for murdering her abusive husband.
DIXIE: He hit her with a hammer. And had done it before. So . . . (starts to fan herself and smiles with full southern charm) she just did what any poor girl's gonna do! You know. Any girl with spirit, I'll say.
SHEEHAN: There's a lot of spirit on the set! Especially between Dixie Carter and Christian de la Fuente, the actor who plays her sexy, personal assistant.
CHRISTIAN DE LE FUENTE: It's a very special relationship between the boss and her assistant, and, I, uh . . . take care of her.
SHEEHAN: Against her better judgement, Kathleen Quinlan's character is forced to bring on another partner -- criminal defense attorney, Rex Weller, played by actor, Christopher McDonald.
CHRISTOPHER McDONALD: He's one of those guys who chases ambulances -- they call them a bottom feeder -- but, you know, at the same time, he's got a huge heart.
Back at the anchor desk.
SHEEHAN: Now the lawyer played by Christopher McDonald has center stage in next week's Family Law when he gets emotionally involved with a client, a case, and, uh, maybe even a principle or two. (turns to anchors) This is a show that really is about something, which is refreshing.
FEMALE ANCHOR: Nice. I have a good feeling about it. Thank you.
